"Necessity is the mother of invention" is an English-language proverb. It means, roughly, that the primary driving force for most new inventions is a need In 1964 Frank Zappa took over leadership of the American rock band The Soul Giants. He renamed the band The Mothers, referring to the jazz compliment of motherfucker for a great musician. However, their record company, Verve Records, objected to the insinuation and by necessity Zappa had to change the name, creating (and defining) The Mothers of Invention

Thank you for sharing all things, MOI...appreciated.
ReplyDeletethanks a lot
ReplyDeleteNow I understand why a bootleg was called "necessity is". Great artwork on those bootlegs, some of the work of Calvin Shenkel was used, but they created something.
ReplyDeleteI did the artwork for this, which Miles used for a time and then dropped for some reason. There's no actual Calvin graphics used, but I tried to make it look as if there was. I did it in Paintbox, a very primitive graphics app, pasting in bits and pieces I found on the internet. I did another cover for Miles, too - I think Mothers Classics, or something like that, which he didn't like. Tough crowd!
