PRETTY LONG

By the time of Bark, personnel changes had gutted much of the original version of Jefferson Airplane, especially with the departure of Marty Balin. Paul Kantner and Grace Slick remained, but their compositions were growing increasingly ill-focused, and Jorma Kaukonen and new drummer Joey Covington were hard pressed to pick up the songwriting slack. The result was an album that bore hallmarks of the classic Airplane sound, but lacked any classic Airplane songs. That said, the record isn't as bad as many reviewers have made it out to be. In fact I find to be one of my favorites in OMO

A couple of notes of interest....."Bark "charted at #11 . Higher than the "Volunteers "LP.

Joey Covington introduced Papa John Creach to Jorma and Jack who had him join Hot Tuna . As Covington filled in for the departed Dryden he introduced Creach to the Airplane.

Bark was the first release on the Airplanes new record label "Grunt"

Pretty As You Feel was released as a single which did chart. The single was culled from a long jam session that included Carlos Santana and Micheal Shrieve.

I have included for your listening pleasure the "Pretty" long cut from the "bark" sessions

"Pretty As You Feel"

Words and Music by Joey Covington and Jack Casady

You're only pretty as you feel
only pretty as you feel inside
you're only pretty as you feel
just as pretty as you feel inside

when you wake up in the morning
rub some sleep from your eye
look inside your mirror
comb your hair

don't give vanity a second chance
no no no
beauty's only skin deep
it goes just so far 'cause
you're only pretty as you feel
you're only pretty as you feel inside
just as pretty as you feel

now you're feelin pretty
now you're feelin good
now you're ready to face the world girl
now you're feelin good
go out there 'n' knock 'em silly girl
go out there 'n' show 'em how ta thrill
'cause you're only pretty as you feel
only pretty as you feel
you're only pretty as you feel
just as pretty as you feel inside
feelin' so pretty, feelin' so pretty
pretty mama.

Thank you, & Happy Easter! I've never heard this long jam version before, and it sounds great. Not such a bad album, & better than Long John Silver. By the way, is the Moby Grape Orphanage show taken off, or am I just strugglin' to find it again?
