Peter Kaukonen (September 23, 1945-) is a San Francisco bay area guitarist/multi-
instrumentalist/songwriter. He is the younger brother of Jorma Kaukonen from Jefferson
Airplane/Hot Tuna. Peter Kaukonen has played, toured, and recorded with Jefferson Airplane,
Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, Johnny Winter, Link Wray, Terry Allen, Ruthann Friedman (author of
"Windy"), as well as his own band, Black Kangaroo. He plays both acoustic and electric guitars; acoustic and electric bass, mandolin, bouzouki, lap steel guitar and piano. His inluences are Chicago and delta blues, fingerpicking guitar, new-age styled acoustic music, rock and roll, jazz and classical music.
Kaukonen's songwriting spans 40 years—from early power trio songs written for Black Kangaroo
and covered by Jefferson Airplane to instrumental compositions.Peter is Jorma's brother(Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna), and both are excellent guitarists. Peter's playing style on this LP seems a little heavier, and his solos are a little more progressive and imaginative than Jorma's more blues based approach.
The production and sound quality on 'Black Kangaroo' are great, recorded at 'Wally Heider's Studio' in San Francisco. The music ranges from all out heavily Hendrix inspired songs, to a couple acoustic blues things, that Jorma was so well known for.Peter's vocal style is very similar to Jorma's, and really suits this style of music.
