I HEAR IT

I have changed the labels box to read alphabetically for an easier search by name.

I was asked again why there are so many dead links on the older postings.....Well all "free" upload services only allows you so much time or size on their servers. Zippyshare allows only 200 mb files or smaller and Mega will only give you a total of so much storage. All the servers of course want you to purchase their premium pakages.  In the case of Zippy the files remain intact for 30 days from every time it gets a hit or download. No activity on a file in 30 days and they delete it.Most of the older files were on Megaupload until they were shut down by the government so I went for awhile with no server and uploaded postings about the artists( explaining the many posts for one artist
Hence my decision to update some of the older selections as time permits

I am happy to be receiving your comments and emails and will continue at a reasonable pace so if I don't get around a particular selection I apologize. Remember if a file has no hits in 30 days it is deleted from the Zippyshare system. Any larger files (over 200mb) will have a Mega link

Enjoy the music , the art, and keep the spirit of the 60's alive and well!

THOUGHTS

I just wanted to say a few words about the blog in general

This blog was started in March of 2008. It has well over 1000 posts
The very first post was Micky Hart's Rolling Thunder.
It is indeed a labor of love focusing on the music that I enjoy
. As you have probably seen I have started updating some of the older files on the site. Summer is on now here in Atlanta and it seems that the blog readers are out doing other things. So I decided to revisit some of the old stuff. I will update a post for you if you can be courteous enough to Email me at 24hrdejavu@gmail.com  I would like your name and location to add a bit of personalization on the request. After all it is nice to know who  I am in contact with. I will ignore all anonymous requests!  As you well know it takes some time to research the materials . Some posts may well be totally obsolete for various reasons
When an update is posted I will use the "Recall" logo and all you have to do is go to the right sidebar and find the artist and click on it  and you can scroll through the page(s) to find your selection. You ..probably noticed I use the term recall vs repost ( I dislike that  description)

Once again I appreciate any comments or ideas that you may have So don't be afraid to plug in a comment or two. It does'nt hurt and I appreciate them

RICHARD NIXON'S JUKEBOX

A couple of months back I had a comment from a reader about my compilations. I have since forgotten who it was but I remembered his final line of the comment was that I should do one and call it Richard Nixon's Jukebox..........SO.........

Nixon could play five musical instruments.
Nixon’s mother insisted he practice on the family’s upright piano every afternoon, and in the seventh grade he was sent 200 miles away to take lessons with his aunt, who had studied at the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music. Although he never learned to read music, Nixon could also play the saxophone, clarinet, accordion and violin. His musical talents turned ot to be political assets: Nixon’s 1963 appearance on “The Jack Paar Program,” during which he played a tune he wrote, helped rehabilitate his image after losing the California gubernatorial election the prior year. As president, he occasionally tickled the ivories, playing “Happy Birthday” for Duke Ellington at the White House and “My Wild Irish Rose” in honor of his wife at the Grand Ole Opry.

Here are 24 tunes that are or could have been connected ( in some bizarre way) to Nixon

01 a well respected man - kinks
02 buckle down with nixon - brian dewan
03 nixon's the one - mono puff
04 politician - cream
05 the love of richard nixon - manic steet preachers
06 go vote nixon - clancy hayes dixieland band
07 i wanna grow up to be a politician - byrds

10 nixon is fixin" -1972 campaign song
11 elected - alice cooper

AND YOU TOUCHED THE DISTANT BEACHS

The universal myth of the mermaid is the myth of the possessive woman, killing her lovers after having made love with them  .
At the beginning, mermaids were creatures of the Greek mythology, whose charming sings lured the sailors, leading them to crash their boats on reefs. Everybody knows the famous passage from Homere's Odyssey, where Ulysses is attached to the mast of his boat to listen to the sings of the mermaids
What is less known, is that the first mermaids of the Greek mythology were represented as creatures half-woman, half bird
The creature half-woman, half-fish, which we now knew appeared much later in the story of the myth.
A teratological anomaly, fortunately very rare, called symely, may have taken a part in the genesis of the mythe of the mermaid : il is a fusion of the lower limbs, giving birth to a human being with a kind of fish tail
The mermaids were considered goddesses of the Dead as well as the Harpies and the Furies but they could sometimes be turned into benevolent goddesses through some specific rites.
In general they were a danger for all the sailors who passed in their nearby since they enchanted them with their seducing voices till they lost any control, dived into the sea where they died drowned.
Ulysses was able to save himself and his crew by this lethal destiny thanks to Circe, the enchantress Circe who was in love with Ulysses. She warned him to fill his men’s ears with  wax so that theiy could not hear the mermaids’voices but, on the other hand,  she advised him to listen to their voices. So Ulysses asked his men to tie him to the mainmast and to let him there no matter what he said or did.
With this devise Ulysses defeated the mermaids who, as a consequence, were condemned to die throwing themselves into the sea.their bodies were driven away along the coast. Parthenepe’s body arrived to the islet of Megaride (where later the Castel dell’Ovo was built ) where it was buried with all the honours due to a divinity.

TURTLES 101

Benjamin Hirsch, the founder of Turtle Wax, wanted to be a chemist, but had to drop out of college during the Great Depression. Instead, he became a magician, supporting his family with his silks and wand. But he never lost his interest in chemistry nor his fascination with cars. In the late 1930s he developed a car wax and mixed up batches at night in the bathtub. His wife, Marie, filled the bottles by hand. During the day, Hirsch traveled by street car to gas stations around Chicago, selling the wax he named Plastone. In 1941, he invested $500 and opened the Plastone Co., which operated out of a series of storefronts.

To promote his wax, Hirsch would go into a parking lot and shine one fender of each car. He then waited for the owners to arrive and hope to convince them to buy his wax to finish the job. Plastone was a couple of years old when, according to company lore, Hirsch made a sales call in Turtle Creek, Wisconsin. The name of the town clicked in his mind with the hard shell of a turtle and the protection his wax offered. Thus was born a new name for the company and for the wax, Turtle Wax Super Hard Shell.

Yes I know they are tortoises. Tortoise, Terrapin, Turtle whatever !
Now here's a lesson on the North american turtle family.

CALL ANY VEGETABLE

"Mr. Green Genes" is a pop song from the Mother of Invention's 1969 LP Uncle Meat.Slow and heavy, it featured strange lyrics about vegetables (a subject already used in "The Duke of Prunes" and "Call Any Vegetable") and contained culinary advice: "Eat your shoes," "You can eat the truck/That brought' em in/Garbage truck." The song ends on a concluding statement of "Nutritiousness/Deliciousness" and "Worthlesness" over a pompous finale. The slow pace and lugubrious mood of the song conjures up the image of a giant -- the Green Giant on packs of frozen vegetables!

In 1970 Frank Zappa released an instrumental version of the song entitled "Son of Mr. Green Genes" (the process of naming a song "son of..." is recurrent throughout Zappa's career, starting with the 1966 "The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet,"and was the result of his fondness for cheap horror movies). This version, included on Hot Rats, kept the original melody over a jazzier, sunnier musical background and featured drummer Paul Humphrey for the first time on a Zappa recording. "Mr. Green Genes" was occasionally performed live from 1968 to 1973, disappeared for 15 years, and was resuscitated for the 1988 tour (it is featured on The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life). "Son of Mr. Green Genes" was part of Zappa's set list from 1970 to 1973, mostly in the form of a medley with "King Kong" and "Chunga's Revenge." The Grandmothers and the Muffin Men interpreted the original version.

Frank Zappa the musician was born in Baltimore, the son of Sicilian immigrant Francis Vincent Zappa, Sr.  Frank Zappa Neither of them was related to Hugh Brannum, the actor who portrayed Mr. Greenjeans on the Captain Kangaroo television show between 1955 and 1984. Brannum, who started his career as a bass player with Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians orchestra on the ''Chesterfield Hour'' radio show in 1940, had a son, but his son was certainly not Frank Zappa. One of the sillier rumors to make the rounds, this legend most likely came about because of Zappa's inclusion of a track entitled "Son of Mr. Green Genes" on his 1969 Hot Rats album. (The song itself was so named because it was a variation on the earlier "Mr. Green Genes," a track from Zappa's 1968 Uncle Meat album.) someone either made a joke about the song title (or took it literally, despite the misspelling), and a legend was born. Frank Zappa himself reported:Because I recorded a song called "Son of Mr. Green Genes" on the Hot Rats album in 1969, people have believed for years that the character with that name on the
Captain Kangaroo TV show (played by Lumpy Brannum) was my "real" Dad. No, he was not.

FRANK'S AUNTIE

Electric Aunt Jemima - Mothers Of Invention from The Uncle Meat LP

The inspiration for Aunt Jemima was Billy Kersands' American-style minstrelsy/vaudeville song "Old Aunt Jemima", written in 1875. The Aunt Jemima character was prominent in minstrel shows in the late 19th century and was later adopted by commercial interests to represent the Aunt Jemima brand.

Rutt reportedly saw a minstrel show featuring the "Old Aunt Jemima" song in the fall of 1889, presented by blackface performers identified by Marquette as "Baker & Farrell". However, Doris Witt was unable to confirm Marquette's account. Witt suggests that Rutt might have witnessed a performance by the vaudeville performer Pete F. Baker, who played a character described in newspapers of that era as "Aunt Jemima". If this is correct, the original inspiration for the Aunt Jemima character was a white male in blackface, whom some have described as a German immigrant.

Marquette recounts that the actor playing Aunt Jemima wore an apron and kerchief, and Rutt appropriated this Aunt Jemima character to market the Pearl Milling Company pancake mix in late 1889 after viewing a minstrel show. However, Rutt and Underwood were unable to make the project work, so they sold their company to the Randolph Truett Davis Milling Company in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1890.

The R. T. Davis Milling Company hired former slave Nancy Green as a spokesperson for the Aunt Jemima pancake mix in 1890. Nancy Green was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky, and played the Jemima character from 1890 until her death on September 23, 1923. As Jemima, Green operated a pancake-cooking display at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1893, appearing beside the "world's largest flour barrel". From this point on, marketing materials for the line of products centered around the stereotypical mammy archetype, including the Aunt Jemima marketing slogan first used at the World Fair: "I's in Town, Honey". Anna Julia Cooper used the World's Columbian Exposition as an opportunity to address how young African American women were being exploited by white men. She predicted the appeal of Aunt Jemima and the southern domestic ideal and went on to describe the north's fascination with southern traditions as part of America’s “unwritten history”. Progressive African American women post emancipation saw Aunt Jemima’s image as a setback that inspired a regression in race relations.

The Davis Milling Company was renamed Aunt Jemima Mills in 1913. The Quaker Oats Company bought the brand in 1926.

No one portrayed Aunt Jemima for ten years following the death of Nancy Green.

In 1933, Quaker Oats hired Anna Robinson to play Aunt Jemima as part of their promotion at the Chicago World Fair in 1933. She was sent to New York City by Lord and Thomas to have her picture taken. "Never to be forgotten was the day they loaded 350 pounds of Anna Robinson on the Twentieth Century Limited." Other photos showing Robinson making pancakes for celebrities and used in advertising "ranked among the highest read of their time".

The company first registered the Aunt Jemima trademark in 1937

And the Frank Zappa statement about his Aunt Jemima.............

"I get kind of laugh out of the fact that other people are going to try to interpret that stuff and come up with some grotesque, interpretations of it. It gives me a certain amount of satisfaction. You can imagine how insane that must get on a song 'Electric Aunt Jemima' which was written about an amplifier. Yes, it's Standall amplifier, about this big, that I used on a couple of sessions" (Zappa: 1969)

Electric aunt jemima
Goddess of love
Khaki maple buckwheats
Frizzle on the stove
Queen of my heart
Please hear my plea
Electric aunt jemima
Cook a bunch for me

Tried to find a reason
Not to quit my job
Beat me till I'm hungry
Found a punk to rob
Love me aunt jemima
Love me now & ever more

Love me aunt jemima

Tried to find a raisin
Brownies in the basin
Monza by the street light
Aunt jemima all night
Holiday & salad days
And days of mouldy mayonaise
Caress me
Caress me
Caress me aunt jemima

TURTLE DRAGON

Umbassa And The Dragon - The Turtles

Proclaimed by many as one of the worst recordings ever made, the Turtles preceded to release this little ditty as the  B-side  on the "Sound Asleep" 45 rpm. this  tells the story of Umbassa and his plight to slay a dragon. Mostly made of jungle noises and relentless chanting it may well be the reason Frank Zappa recruited most of the band into his reformed Mothers of Invention  hence giving birth to Flo and Eddie.

OCTOPUS

Syd Barrett - Octopus

Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (6 January 1946 – 7 July 2006) was an English musician, composer, singer, songwriter and painter. Best known as a founder member of the band Pink Floyd, Barrett was the lead vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter in its early years and is credited with naming the band. Barrett left Pink Floyd in April 1968 and was briefly hospitalized amid speculation of mental illness exacerbated by drug use.

Trip to heave and ho
Up down to and fro'
You have no word
Trip trip to a dream dragon
Hide your wings in a ghost tower
Sails cackling at every plate we break

Was cracked by scattered needles
The little minute gong coughs and clears his throat

Madam you see
Before you stand
Hey ho never be still
The old original favorite grand
Grasshoppers green her Barian band
And the tune they play is in us confide

So trip to heave and ho
Up down to and fro'
You have no word

Please leave us here
Close our eyes to the Octopus ride

Isn't it good to be lost in the wood
Isn't it bad so quiet there in the wood
Meant even less to me than I thought
With a honey plough of yellow prickly seeds
Clover honey pots and mystic shining feed

Well the madcap laughed
At the man on the border
Hey ho huff the Talbot
Cheat he jumped shouting Kangaroo
It's true in their tree they cried

Please leave us here
Close our eyes to the Octopus ride

Please leave us here
Close our eyes to the Octopus ride

The madcap laughed
At the man on the border
Hey ho huff the Talbot

The winds ain't blew and the leaves in white
They'll never put me in their bag
The seas will reed you'll always see
So high you go so low you creep

The wind it blows in tropical heat
The drones they throng on mossy seats
The squeaking door will always squeak
Two up two down we'll never ever meet
So merely trip and go my side

Please leave us here
Close our eyes to the Octopus ride

THREE BLIND MICE

Max Romeo & the Upsetters.
Reggae rendition of an old English nursery rhyme changing the lyrics to tell the story of a police raid on a local party.

Max Romeo ( 22 November 1944, St. D'Acre, St. James, Jamaica) is a reggae and roots reggae recording artist who has achieved chart success in his home country and in the United Kingdom. Romeo had several hits with the vocal group the Emotions. His album "Wet Dream" (1968) included overtly sexual lyrics and launched a new style of reggae.
"Three Blind Mice" was written by Maxie Smith.

I went to a party, last Saturday night
When I reached the party everything was right
Then Babylon raid, them raid, them raid
Me gets me 'fraid, me gets me 'fraid

It was like three blind mice
You could-a see how dem run
It was like three blind mice
You could-a see how dem run

Baddie sticks start flyin', man start to bawl
Some jump de fence, some put off defense
But it gets me 'fraid when Babylon raid

The police checked the deejay
Tell him to turn off sound
The crowd never like that
Them start gathering 'round

Let the music play
Let it play, let it play
Let the music play

It was like three blind mice
You could-a see how dem run
It was like three blind mice
No man no want go a jail

Let the music play
Let it play, let it play
Let the music play
Let the music play
Let it play, let it play

PEEVEY'S XMAS WISH

I have decided to add a new topic to the site. It seems that my blog lacks the most important item that should be included...... Music! I will post some different images on a weekly( or more basis) Since I am a big fan of such things as weird or nostalgic, sci fi and general offbeat items, you never know what will hit the posting. And all will have a selected tune to accompany it with a tidbit or so about the picture or song.
I will call the topic" From The Edge". that should cover just about anything that my taste happens to be at the time. Regular postings of the music will continue as always

So without further ado since it is Xmas time let's do a couple of Holiday things!!

Gayla Rienette Peevey was born March 8th, 1943 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in Capitol Hill Hospital to Lewin Austin and Edith Irene Peevey. The attending physician, Dr. Jackson. The family moved to Ponca City around 1948 and resided at 508 North Oak St. She began singing as a preschooler at the Second Baptist Church of Ponca City where she and her family were active members, and around the community for various events. When she got old enough to attend Lincoln Elementary school, she sang almost every day for her classmates and for assemblies. The second half of 4th grade her family moved back to Oklahoma City where Gayla began singing regularly on local TV on station WKY-TV. They moved to Hollywood the Summer of 1953 to appear as a regular on the Saturday Night Review hosted by Hoagy Carmichael. She signed a recording contract with Columbia Records around September of that year and recorded "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" and "Are My Ears on Straight" in New York produced by Mitch Miller. It was released Christmas of 1953. Gayla sang it in October on the Ed Sullivan Show prior to it's release. Taking advantage of the song's popularity, the Oklahoma City Zoo did a promotion with the News Paper to raise money mostly from donations sent in by children to buy "Gayla" a hippo. The campaign was a success and Matilda was delivered on Christmas Eve morning. Gayla accepted the baby hippo and then donated her to the zoo. Matilda lived in the Oklahoma City Zoo for over forty years and gave birth to many babies who were placed in other zoos around the country.

Gayla recorded a number of other children's songs, but none caught on like the Hippo song which is still popular today around the world. In fact it seems to have grown in popularity and airplay in the last fifteen or so years.
