CATCH THE LIGHT

Freelight was a San Francisco based jazz fusion band - formed 1977 - who completed demos early in 1978 and went label hunting. Although they recorded several tracks, they never made it past a solid demo stage. Eventually litigation over the tapes resulted in their demise. The band broke up after a final and triumphant performance at the Troubador in Los Angeles

The band was actually the creation of Pam Tillis (Mel's daughter) John Cipollina was a key member during the band's existence. This was a much different look into John's participation in one of his many band memberships in that his was a supporting player for the group leader Tillis. Still, there are quite a few fine moments where Cipollina was given some freedom to do what he did best.

 Included in the share are  the tracks from the Freelight demo sessions and the live performance from the Troubador

This is really a great show, with the standard Fish & Cip's songs, plus a few rare ones too. The playing is quite inspired showing the fine playing of all. Stu Blank on keys and synthesizer adds a unique touch to the show

GROWING UP A..PROBLEM CHILD

Problem Child was born out of the band Little Joe founded by legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service drummer Greg Elmore, which also featured Greg Douglass (guitar), Bobby Vega (bass) and Charlie Williams (vocals)....

Charlie Williams would join up with former Doobie Brother Tom Johnston, and Greg Elmore would continue to work with Terry & The Pirates, and Nick Gravenites....

From there the band would continue as a four piece with John Cipollina and Greg Elmore handling the vocals, however this line up would change again and on Sept. 7th Bobby would quit Problem Child and they realized that yes they had chosen the right name....

Jeff quit Bad Dog only to be replaced by Greg Elmore, and Problem Child in need of a singer and bass player, it made sense for the two bands to merge....

This new line up of Problem Child - John Cipollina, Greg Douglass, Greg Elmore, Alex Dore amd Mike Pegeus - made their debut at the Starry Plough in Berkeley on September 20, 1986....

It was soon after this that Greg Elmore discovered Chris Cole singing with Bobby Vega's new group, The Joneses, and while enjoying a beer and the music decided to steal Chris away to join Problem Child.

Rob had been in Terraplane with Greg Douglass, Greg Elmore, Andy Andrus and occasionally Chris Cole and was the most logical replacement.

this show would be a beginning point for Problem Child with Paul Butterfield guesting for the night for the departed Charlie Williams

THE FIRST OF MANY TO FOLLOW

Copperhead was a band organized by guitarist John Cipollina after he left Quicksilver Messenger Service in 1970. Cipollina, who had been a member of Quicksilver since its formation and whose lead guitar playing was its signature sound, had grown increasingly dissatisfied after the return of band founder Dino Valenti from a prison term, when the group grew larger and he found he had less space to play. He had also grown increasingly interested in playing sessions, which the band discouraged. 

The early days of Copperhead were casual, with the group consisting of a loose aggregation of people playing gigs with Cipollina. Eventually it coalesced into a quartet consisting of Cipolliana on lead guitar; Gary Philippet on vocals, second guitar, and organ; Jim McPherson on vocals, bass, and piano; and David Weber on drums. The group was initially signed to the Just Sunshine label run by Michael Lang, one of the organizers of Woodstock. 

But in 1972 it was signed to a major-label record deal by Clive Davis at Columbia and recorded its debut album, Copperhead, released in the spring of 1973. Unfortunately, Davis was fired from Columbia shortly after the album's release, an action that doomed any developing band that had been signed under his aegis. The album went nowhere, and when Columbia refused to release their second album, Copperhead folded. Cipollina went on to play in many different bands before passing in 1989.

 For many years the combination of John Cipollina and Nick Gravenites played together in different incarnations of bands. For a couple of years they used the banner of "Nicksilver". This is a smooth sounding soundboard from a set in Providence R.I. in 83. The combo of Nick and John always seemed to gel was a great period in John's career.

THE LAST HURRAH

John's last public gigs were May 8 at the Chi Chi Club with Terry & the Pirates, and on May 13 at the Saloon with Fish'n'Chip.
On May 28, 1989 John passed away due to respiratory failure. On June 28 a tribute concert was held at the Fillmore Auditorium. The capacity crowd filled the hall to hear the dozens of musicians pay tribute to John including Peter Albin, Greg Anton, Antonia Cipollina, Mario Cipollina, Chris Cole, Terry Dolan, Spencer Dryden, Greg Elmore, John Farey, Martine Fierro, David Freiberg, Nick Gravenites, Dan Healy, Nicky Hopkins, Robert Hunter, Doug Killmer, Steve Kimock, Paul Liberatore, Barry Melton, Merl Saunders, Pete Sears, Mark Unobsky, Al Staehely, Rocky Sullivan, David Weber and others, who rocked the roof off the Fillmore.

John Cipollina spent the better part of his life doing what he knew best - playing guitar. When John played, his body, mind and guitar became as one. His style of playing was unique. John created an original sound that would become his signature trademark, making him one of the most identifiable guitarists in the history of rock'n'roll. ( Mike Somaville)

DANCING EDWARD

Here is a bootleg that is (to the best of my knowledge) from John Cipollina's private collection. I have little knowledge of who actually takes part in this studio session and various outtakes. My original source claims all of the then current band members were on this recording. However in listening to the complete recording I would suggest that is pretty much John and Nicky working out various  riffs on "Edward". There is also the possibility that there is another session dated 7-23 and 24 with additional recordings. Take it for what it's worth in historical value. Feedback on the post is welcome
